man against beast

Published in the August 2018 issue of Augustman, we investigated the war between humans and elephants in Thailand.

I worked with writer Duncan Forgan and photographer Aaron Joel Santos on a story that took us to the jungles of Thailand. There the duo faced the fight over land between humans and elephants.

As Duncan writes, “The causes of the problem are not difficult to ascertain. As human populations continue to grow, more land is required to build homes and grow crops to meet demand. And as people encroach into elephant habitats, the animals are forced to venture out of their familiar territory to find alternative sources of food and water.”

The investigative feature was an important story to tell. As more people become aware of how we are failing nature and the ecosystem that depends on it, we must also be cognizant of the complexities involving politics, activists, enforcers, and poachers alike.

It’s in stories like these — literary meaningful, and visually captivating — that help shift perceptions on our role in creating a better future. I hope to tell more stories on how we can further our impact on nature and what we can do to be better.
